Strategic thinking is critical in today's world. From performing well in school to even being a good football player, strategy is key to success. But explaining strategy to a kid can be difficult. A kid doesn't want to think about placement, planning, or contingencies. Kids want to act and the outcome just happens. But, I want my kids understand that a specific action incurs a specific result. So, how do I make this concept clear to my kids. I've found a game that is perfect - Nowhere to Go.
Nowhere to Go is a strategy game by Educational Insights. Two players battle to see how you can trap your opponent into no more moves. The object is to use your blocks to eliminate any possible moves over the bridges.
The game board is an unique hexagonal game board. Each player moves their space across the board. After his move, he places a block. The game continues until a player can longer move over a bridge.
What I like about this game is that the process promotes a discussion on strategy. First my kids would just move aimless around the board and place blocks around the edges. There was no thought about what they were trying to accomplish or the potential outcome of what their blocks meant. As they got better at the game, we were able to see patterns and possibilities in each block placement.
In our world, I was able to relate these game moves to play on the football field. We would compare the play of the game to their positions on the football field. For example, if I place a block directly in front of my opponent's spy, can he still move? Would a block to the side be more effective? Where will my opponent go if I block the path to the left? All of these questions are important when tackling and blocking on a football field. The more my kids understand the premise of strategical thinking the better they can react to a variety of situations.

Twister has been a family game night staple. From right hand on red to left leg on blue, the positions and contortions that players can hold leaves everyone in stitches.
But every game can use a few updates. This year the classic Twister is going to be given a make over with Twister Dance.
In my neighborhood, the kids love to play music and have dance parties. From creating elaborate routines to jamming to music, everyone likes to crank up the ipod and groove. Twister Dance combines kids love of dance with the classic Twister game.
Twister Dance gets kids up and grooving to the directions. This game combines all of today's best dance music with the iconic Twister spots. Girls (and guys) will learn the hottest dance moves to today's biggest hits. Plus, this game offers a custom Twister remix of Till the World Ends by Britney Spears.
The console offers bright, multi-color LED lights, which show the players where to place their feet. Players can use their own unique style and flair for hand movements (hand don't have a specific placement like traditional twister).
The console has several songs programed into the console. Also, any mp3 player can be connected to the console. The built-in beat detections system urns any song into a dance routine. Regardless of your favorite genre, from rock to country, players can rock the spots every time you play.

Rickland Orchards Greek Yogurt Bar, sophisticated flavor everyone enjoys - review
Our house eats a lot of granola bars, cereal bars, and basically anything that can easily be thrown in a bag for a quick snack. While I like many of the bars out there, I don't see a lot of flavor variety. Sure oatmeal raisin can be tasty, but I don't wan to eat it every other day.
Rickland Orchards Greek Yogurt Bars are made from all natural ingredients. What makes these bars different from other varieties is the Greek yogurt. Based on the idea that many people are having greek yogurt mixed with granola for breakfast, Rickland Orchards created a way of having that breakfast favorite in a convenient bar form.
I like the idea of on-the-go breakfasts and snacks. The downside of some of these snack is that they tend to be heavy on the sweet and low on the fruit flavor. The more sophisticated flavors appeal to the adults. The yogurt sweetness appeals to the kids. By combining these two flavors, these bars are perfect for a whole family treat.

Childhood classic comes to life in Hansel and Gretel animated storytale by Epic Tales- review/giveaway
There are certain stories that evoke childhood memories. For me, I loved reading the classic Grimm fairy tales. One of my favorites is Hansel and Gretel. I'm not sure why I was drawn to this story. Maybe it is because the children succeed or because there is a happy ending. This fairy tale was bedtime companion.
I like to share some of my favorite stories with my kids. Unfortunately, in today's reading landscape, the kids are drawn to more fantastical or humorous stories. While I understand the draw of stories involving wedgies and superheroes, I want them to read other books too (maybe they would even like the stories that I had growing up).
The easiest way for my kids to engage in other literature is through reading apps. These apps have superlative animation that keeps the kids engaged in the story. With the option to read to self or read to, the reading app can grow with your child as his reading ability increases.
The Hansel and Gretel: Epic Tales animated story book is a perfect example of bringing a classic story to life. For many of us, we know the tale. Two little children are left in the wood where they become captives of the evil witch. Of course, the children escape and live happily ever after.
There are several items that I enjoy about this animated story book. First, the animation is high quality. From each picture to the interactive elements, the scene jumps off your iPad. The colors are rich yet realistic. Each scene feels as if a child's imagination came to life.
The read to self option for this story book is interesting. Instead of having separate pages or half picture/half written word, the story scrolls under the picture. When the page is complete, stars sweep the page alerting the reader to move to the next page. The pace of the words is good for an intermediate reader.
In addition to the story itself, this app has interactive play area. Each chapter has specific items that move, make sound and add character to the story. My kids enjoy seeing the fun features after a story. We use the play feature as a reward for reading well.
For those traveling with kids or for long waits, I think that the Hansel and Gretel Epic Tales animated story book would be a perfect companion. Many kids are very familiar with iPads or iPhones and parents don't have to bring tons of items to occupy the down time. This story will keep the kids engaged. The read to me portion is like having a little movie on your iPad.

In my household, I have two very different children. One child thinks on his feet, is a quick learner and absorbs information quickly. My second child has to be coaxed into school work, struggles with reading and would prefer to play. With two different style, I like to find tools that are fun and are educational. That's where KaBAM comes into play.
KaBAM is word building challenge game. Players can play as individuals or as teams. Each player draws two cards. Each card features word parts including suffixes, prefixes, single vowels, consonants and dipthongs. The first player to create a word using the two cards wins the round.
We've been using KaBAM in a few different ways. Since my kids are still building their spelling skills, we modify the game to see how many words a player can create with the two cards. It helps my kids to think about letter sounds building into a word. This game has been a discussion point on the importance of pronunciation, word choice and spelling.
On a recent road trip, we used the cards as a conversation spark. I would pull a card or two and the kids would have to think of a word with that specific letter. It could be a place we visited, a sight on the road, or a memory of the trip.
What I really like about this game is that it can grow with your children. As their vocabulary improves, there are more words that they can create. From playing first word made to number of words known, there are multiple ways to play.
For adult games, players can get more creativity. Some options could be think of an adjective with the specific letter or a place. This game can be adapted in numerous ways.

Perky Plus Stain remover, making clean-up easy review
I look at certain items in my life and wonder. For example, why do home builders put in light color carpet in homes. Any mom who has a child will attest light color carpet is not family friendly. Between muddy shoes and the occasional spilled drink, it seems at least once a week that I have to clean carpets.
When I look for a stain remover, I want one that works in many scenarios. From the carpets to furniture spills, I want one cleaner that can do it all. Also, I want the cleaner to not be full of chemicals, especially harsh chemicals.
Right now I'm trying Perky Spotter Plus. This product was created by Groom Industries, a leader in the professional cleaning supplies for over 35 years. Perky is designed to fight the source of the stain in the carpet and pad. In addition to cleaning the stain, the formula neutralizes odors. Overall, your carpet and fabric has an improved look and smell.
What I liked about this cleaner is that it was good for spot cleaning. I often get small areas of dirt or mud on the carpet in the family room (darn football cleats). This cleaner was fast and easy to use on those small stains. I simply squirted the solution and dabbed with a clean white towel.
