Technology and age appropriate learning with Vtech Innotab 3 revew - review/giveaway

Little kids are very technology savvy. It seems that they can maneuver through tablets, smartphones and computers. This knowledge raises the question not whether they can use these devices, rather it is should they use them.  Recently, I was given the opportunity for my kids to try the Vtech Innotab 3 learning app tablet. It is the solution to giving kids technology that is age appropriate.

Like other parents, I have let my kids use my tablet as a diversion. But, I didn't really think about all of my apps that may not be appropriate for little eyes. It isn't like I can delete and re-install apps every time that I allow my kids to play with the device. The answer is to give them an age appropriate electronic device.

Vtech Innotab 3 is both an educational and entertainment electronic device.

Here's what you can find on the Innotab 3
  • Camera and video recorder - the 180 rotating camera and video recorder lets you take pictures, edit photos, use wacky special effects and more.
  • E-reader with story dictionary - Read fun and interactive e-books as stories come to life. Learn the meanings of words with the built in story dictionary.
  • Art Studio- Unleash their creative side as they color, draw, paint and decorate with special stickers.
  • Play games - use motion, sound and touch to play learning games. Use the D-Pad and included stylus to add to the fun.
  • Wonder Cam - Create funny faces and photo frames, fantasy effects and kaleidoscope creations with over 55 effects.

From the parent perspective, here are the items that I appreciate. First, the size is perfect to fit in your purse or small carry all. Kids can easily maneuver the device, the stylist and buttons. For the most part, a child would not need assistance from an adult.

The story apps were my favorite. I liked that the story highlight each word as it was read aloud. This pattern reinforces listening to the written word. Plus, the story was easy to understand and engaging for the kids.

Also, I appreciated how the entertainment games added interested facts into game time. For example, in the water game, the game would pause to share a fact about how water freezes. When a level is completed there was additional facts shared. The kids didn't get frustrated that they were sitting and learning. Rather, they thought that they were just playing a game.

My kids loved the camera and video capabilities. From taking pictures of themselves to creating a dance video, the Innotab 3 kept them entertained for hours. Plus, each kid was able to create his own profile. Everyone was able to maintain his high score, carefully crafted drawing and fun pictures.

The Vtech Innotab 3 retails for approximately $69.99. It is recommended for ages 3-9. Accessories, covers and additional cartridges are sold separately. For more information on this product and other Vtech learning products please see the Vtech Twitter feed and Vtech Facebook page.
