Spending the day with my son at Wizard World Comic Con Chicago

As the summer drew to a close, I decided to have a special day with my son. He loves reading his comic books and pretending to be one of the superheroes. I asked him if he wanted to attend Wizard World Comic Con Chicago with me. He was excited with the opportunity to see what the convention had to offer.

Wizard World Comic Con Chicago is a huge event held over four days at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. The event has artists, celebrities and comic fans coming together to celebrate a popular genre.

We sat down together and looked at the schedule for kids' day. Over the four day event, Comic Con Chicago offers a special day that focuses on kids and their families. We had a few must see booths and  appearances. Mostly, he was excited to just see everything the event had to offer.

Our first stop was to see some of the famous characters roaming the entry area. From Spiderman to a zombie, my son wanted to pose for pictures with all of them. Everyone was very accommodating and friendly.

With so many booths to visit, my son asked to visit the various booths and displays that were labeled with LEGO. Since we have thousands and thousands of Legos and my son designs new creations each day, he wanted to see what Lego items were available. One of the highlights for him was the Lego display with scenes of Spongebob, Stars Wars and Toy Story. Hours and hours of work went into these creations.

The other must see for my son was a stop by the WWE booth where CM Punk was signing autographs. While we didn't get a signed autograph, my son was happy to walk past and see one of the WWE superstars in person.

One of the big draws to Comic Con events is the celebrity appearances. From Stan Lee to Dean Cain, there are so many celebrities to see throughout the event. Even if you don't purchase autographs or pictures, you can still walk around the celebrity area and see all your favorite stars. While my son didn't know all of the celebrities, I was thrilled to see people like Luke Perry, Kevin Sorbo and many more.

As we walked through Artists Alley, I was pleasantly surprised to see several artists that cater to kids. One booth offered two books, The Adventures of Dorse and Doose and Super Newts that are just for kids. My son laughed at the stories. Most importantly, he could read and understand the plots on his own. Comics can be a great way for kids to develop their reading skills.

Personally, both my son and I loved the HarpToons booth. Steve Harpster has a line of books and an app that teaches kids (and adults) how to draw animals and monsters by using numbers and letters. The concept is great to teach kids how to draw. I struggle to help my kids draw well. These books and apps are easy to understand, simple to follow and fun to draw.  Check them out on www.harptoons.com.

These are just a few of our highlights from Wizard World Comic Con Chicago. Did you attend the show?  Share your highlights in the comments section.
