Newborns and the holidays don't have to be overwhelming - Playtex advice and giveaway

The holidays can be overwhelming for moms. Between all the shopping, cooking, and general life, moms can fell stressed. For new moms, the holiday season can be even more overwhelming.

To help new moms this holiday season, Dr. Laura Jana, author of Heading Home with your Newborn: From Birth to Reality Second Edition, and Playtex have helpful hints to ease any anxiety during this time.

Go with the Flow with Feedings: Being on a specific schedule can be difficult for anyone, let alone a newborn. Setting a routine as a new parent will be full of variation. One hint is to focus your attention on feeding your newborn every few hours so that he is getting enough to gain weight and grow.

Babies, Bubble, and Burping: Some of the most common feeding challenges are gas, colicky symptoms and spit-ups. One way to help reduce these symptoms is to try a bottle system that mimics an infant natural suck, swallow and breathing patterns. A bottle system like Playtex Drop-Ins can help babies suck without extra air, which can help with less gas, colic, and spit ups.

Nipple Confusion:  To help your baby have more successful bottle-feedings, look for a bottle with a nipple that allows for age-appropriate flow and is designed to more closely resemble the breast. These characteristics can help baby avoid confusion between breast and bottle feedings.

Moms on the Go: Whether you’re going back to work or traveling to Grandma’s house, try out a few bottles several weeks before the big event. Any challenges can be handled at home and adjustments can be made.

Decrease Stress:  Between lack of sleep and a new baby, life as a new parent can seem overwhelming. Why not accept help from friends and family. Whether it’s an offer to make dinner or a spouse who can help with a bottle feeding, any momentary break can offer a little respite in your new routine.

Think Outside the House:  As much as you would like to plan the day around a newborn’s feeding schedule, it may not be practical. Sometimes running errands right after a feeding, with a content, clean baby, could make your trip more enjoyable. Also, try to run errands during off hours can help you and your baby get accustomed to going out more often.

Go Pro: Ask and ask again. Whether it’s your pediatrician, health professional or just a good friend, all of the people can be a source of knowledge for all your questions.

These are just a few tips to help new moms during the holidays. Even more information on caring for your new baby from Dr. Jana and Playtex can be found in Heading Home with Your Newborn: From Birth to Reality or www.Playtexbaby.com

  23. I would suggest relying on your baby's hunger cues to know when to feed - chewing on hands and getting fussier. Plus, burp often!

  34. My best feeding advice if you're using formula, use the concentrated version or ready to feed formula. Powders are messy, get contaminated easily and are hard to measure. Get a small pitcher for mixing and prepare bottles ahead of time for the day. Never warm them in a microwave. Instead, fill a mug with water (half way), put it in the microwave for 2 minutes, then put the bottle in the hot water for a minute or two and test on your tongue or wrist. You should not feel any difference in temp on your skin.
