Food battles can turn into a war of the wills, Happy Family Stories from the Bright Side

Happy Family and Social Moms contacted me to share a funny story about kids and food. By sharing my story, I may be compensated for my time, but the stories and thoughts that I'm sharing are my own.

When my kids were little, I strived to be such a good mom. From organic foods to home prepared meals, I wanted everything to be perfect. Then, one day I hit a brick wall. Not literally, a brick wall, but the crying, fighting, and mess on the ground would have made a brick wall look inviting.

My oldest son likes structure, patterns and rules. It isn't extreme, but he finds comfort in the ordinary and usual. So when one day, we ventured outside of the box for dinner, it became a nightmare. I know what you're thinking, I must have been serving some kale, quiona or some other strange item for dinner. Nope. I served him a hot dog. That's right, an all American classic that is beloved by many kids, the hot dog.

Happy Family Food Moments
It was a great summer day and I wanted something that screamed summer, a grilled hotdog. Just because I like my hot dog with pickle relish doesn't mean that I would introduce that condiment on my first hot dog. I gave my son a plate full of carefully cut up pieces with ketchup and mustard on the side of the plate. Simple, easy (or so I assumed - and we all know what that means).

He looked at the plate and looked at me like I had grown something out of the top of my head. At first, there was the attempt to push the plate away. Then we had the drop on the floor, which was shortly followed by the crying, stomping and total meltdown. I was at a loss. It was a hot dog. I thought that all kids, just about everyone loved hot dogs. My frustration got my husband involved and then I knew that all bets were off. My son and his hot dog sat at the table for a very long time until eventually that hot dog was gone. The funny thing is that today my son loved hot dogs. He would have a hot dog every day if I let him.

What did I learn from this food battle? Life is unpredictable, frustrating and even a little funny. I still don't know why my son balked at the hot dog. It could have been a bad day; it could have been he wasn't feeling well; or it could have been absolutely nothing. In the end, I know that these moments happen to many parents. Hopefully, we all call look back at these moments and laugh.

  1. Not that I wish anyone discomfort, but it's kind of nice to hear that other people experience the same problems you have. It's even better when you can laugh about it!

  3. I agree with Melanie, sometimes it's just nice to know you aren't the only one! My daughter is the worst out of all my kids. And it has been such a struggle. It's nice to see others and how they can help me learn to laugh about it.

  5. The eating battle can make meal time so frustrating. We've struggled with our 12 year old for years! Thankfully we can laugh at a lot of it now.
