Get the family outside with REI's Family Adventure Program

During summer vacation it can be difficult to pry the kids away from the video games and television. I know that they need a break from school, but I want them to be active. Recently I was introduced to a great program that gets kids and parents outside enjoying nature.

Knowing how important it is for families to get outside and enjoy nature, REI has developed the REI Family Adventure. The REI Adventure program is an engaging way to encourage kids to get outdoors this summer.

The REI Adventure Program focuses on three factors: removing barriers that keep kids from recreating outside, inspires interest in the natural world, and creating a lifetime of outdoor recreation and stewardship.
Families can join the program by either picking up or downloading their own Adventure Journal. Adventure Journals are available at local REI stores or on-line at www.REI.com.  After getting their journals, families can explore family-friendly hikes and bike rides in their area. The detailed descriptions of the trails are available at REI stores and on-line at www.REI.com/family-adventure.  After completing at least one outdoor activity, kids can tear-off a postcard from their journal to receive a certificate of completion.

To help get families ready for their outdoor adventures, REI offers an interactive map on its website. In various states, REI has found numerous hiking and biking trails. Whether your family is looking for a trail close to home in Illinois or on vacation in Wisconsin or Minnesota, all these trails are available on REI.com.  In addition directions to the trails, the website offers a list of items that families should bring with them during their travels.

Throughout the summer REI is offering free store classes and events. For example, on June 12 the Oakbrook Terrace REI is offering an event celebrating National Get Outdoors Day.  Other upcoming events include Great American Backyard Camp-Out: Saturday, June 26. For a complete list of upcoming store events, please visit the REI website for complete details.

Whether your family is looking for a close to home day adventure or a longer travel plan, REI has experts ready with advice for healthy and budget-friendly ways to spend time outdoors.
No more excuses. Join with REI for a fun filled summer of family outdoor adventure.
