Subway makes strides with #EatFresh #KidsMeals, enjoy #FRESHFIT meal, review/giveaway

I'm going to be honest. Some days I don't want to prepare a meal for my family. It could be that I'm tired, I am busy, or I just plain don't want to cook. What ever the reason, a fast casual restaurant can be a quick, convenient option to my problem. Still, I have guilt about giving my kids a meal with extra sodium, fat or lacking fruits and vegetables. Don't get me wrong. A treat here or there is good for everyone, but I try to be conscious about the foods that I give my children.

In today's society, some fast casual restaurants offer kids meals that contain 1000 calories and are high in sodium and fat. Even with my kids heavily active lifestyle, a single meal with so many calories is not the best idea.

According to a recent study, 91% of kids' meals at chains do not meet the National Restaurant Association's Kids LiveWell menu standards.  It is recommended that healthy kids' meals have 600 calories or less, get 35% or less of their calories from total fat and total sugar, have no more than 770 mg. sodium, and also meet other nutrition criteria. The standards emphasize lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole-grain and low-fat dairy products.

My family enjoys Subway and the various options on its menu. One of our easy go to lunches during swim meets is a Subway sandwich. The kids enjoy creating their own sandwich.
