Rock, Paper, Scissor, Lizard, Spock! Big Bang Theory wins again - review

How do you solve a debate?  Do you arm wrestle?  How about test of knowledge?  Better yet, solve your dispute with a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock! Yes you heard me right. This is not the game that you played as a kid. There's a twist.

Some of you may know this game from the Big Bang Theory. Yes, Sheldon has made this game popular, but the started before the show. Here are the rules.
  • Scissors cuts paper
  • Paper covers rock
  • Rock crushes lizard
  • Lizard poisons Spock
  • Spock smashes scissors
  • Scissors decapitates lizard
  • Lizard eats paper
  • Paper disproves Spock
  • Spock vaporizes rock
  • Rock crushes scissors
Simple, right?

Ok, so the rules can get a little complicated. Still, I've taught my kids this game. We needed a new way to solve disputes. When you have two boys in the house, there are many disputes. Although Spock isn't a well know character in our house, the concept was understood (after all what little boy doesn't like a character that can vaporize a rock).

The most popular go to symbol is lizard. I've asked many times why lizard is so popular and I'm still not sure. We used to play the old school game with dynamite. We eventually had to put that extra option away because no one would ever play the other symbols.

Still the person who does this game the best is Sheldon, from The Big Bang Theory. He knows all the rules and can clearly explain the concept. (I definitely need a cheat sheet to keep all the winning moves straight). The only problem with this game (as seen on the show) is that everyone always wants to be Spock. There needs to be a new twist to avoid the Spock stalemate.

Now that you've more familiar with the show and one of their games, what game does your family use to solve disputes? Would you try Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock? Share you thoughts in the comment section.
