For anyone who has seen Tangled, you know how beautiful a display of lanterns floating in the sky can be. This weekend, March 3, the City of Highwood will celebrate its 125th anniversary by hosting the first annual sky lantern festival.
The City of Highwood has several events planned for the weekend. From the Battle Buddy Race to the Tough Man Barbeque Challenge, there is something for every one.
Saturday morning will kick off with the Battle Buddy Race. A total of 9 teams with either Army, Navy or community backgrounds will traverse the 5K obstacle course. Tasks include push-ups, running and the General Jimmie J Wells Challenge (100 upper body and 100 core exercises.
After this grueling event is completed, everyone is encouraged to try the tasty treats from the Toughman Barbeque Challenge. In the spirit of major BBQ championships (think Memphis in May), participants will toil long and hard to cook their best barbeque offerings. One will eventually crowned king or queen of barbeque. Everyone will be able to taste these fierce competitors offers. All remaining food will be donated to local Veteran Support Organizations with food banks.
With the first events completed, everyone is encouraged to visit the local establishments to enjoy the afternoon. Local eateries will offer food and drink specials as well as musical performances.
Everyone is encouraged to purchase supplies to create and sign their own lantern for the inaugural event.
At 6 pm, the City of Highwood Metra lot will close to start the lantern festival. All lanterns will be launched into the air as a symbol of wishes for the New Year and a congratulations for the City of Highwood's 125th Anniversary.
Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to celebrate with your community. Celebrate the City of Highwood's 125th Anniversary with the first annual Lantern Festival March 3.
