Arrr me hearties. It is that time of year again to celebrate the pirate in all of us.
Sunday, September 19 is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. While many people are unaware of this holiday, the celebration has gained international awareness seven years ago when it was mentioned in an article by Dave Barry.
International Talk Like a Pirate Day was created by John Baur and Mark Summers. These two men sought to celebrate their inner pirate by speaking like a pirate every September 19. Why would anyone want to celebrate this day, simply stated it is fun to talk like a pirate.
For those with small children, imitating pirates might not be our first choice for a Sunday activity. Actually, real pirates, not Capitan Feathersword from the Wiggles, were ruthless individuals. So why should we celebrate this holiday, because it reminds us that talking like a pirate is silly and it is ok to be silly.
Some options for celebrating this day can be rent a bunch of pirate themed movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Captain Ron, or Peter Pan. While watching your movies, why not break out some grog, pirate shaped cookies or even make a pirate themed pizza. And, since this year it's celebrated on a Sunday, why not watch the Buccaneers or Raiders on television and get your best pirate football dance ready.
For a more educational approach, read to your kids from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island or create Pirate hats.
In all, International Talk Like a Pirate Day gives us permission to act a little silly for a day. So break out your best "arrr" and "ahoy" to all your friends.
